Agriculture in Sumer- Ashley Ritter

Britannica had an awesome story on Agriculture and when reading through it the article that caught my eye was the one about Sumer. In this section of the article it talks about Sumer which was a little civilization in Mesopotamia and it was located between the Tigris and the Euphrates. Sumer was a part of the early dynastic phase and they were first in development of a nuanced writing system based on the Sumerian language. During their time period they were learning how to domesticate sheep and goats and they were using them for multiple different purposes and they kept breeding and figuring out more ways to use the animals for help. Then the name cattle was born and they continued to have large herds of animals and as the town started to grow more they started to domesticate more and more animals.

  1. This blog shows how we changed some animals from generation of breeding to make them to the animals we eat today like cows or chickens. I find it interesting that Sumer created something to help their small population with the agricultural and they’re the early founders of the agricultural industry we have today. Humans always find a way to survive or invest something that makes it easier on us and this blog is a great example of that.
