Carliss Howell: Renewable Energy

Looking into more information regarding energy, I decided to take a dive into the world of renewable energy. There is a lot of information out there within articles about what renewable energy is, how it is positively affecting our world, and more. Today I am going to tell you a little bit about what renewable energy is, the different variety of sources and some of the pros and cons of each one.

Renewable energy can be defined as energy that is sustainable or something that cannot run out (endless). This type of energy can be referred to as “alternative energy” because it can be used as an alternate means for other non-sustainable sources. There are several different renewable energy sources which include solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy, tidal energy, geothermal energy, and biomass energy. Solar energy is all based on sunlight, it is renewable because it is abundant and available most of the time however since it is only available during certain times of day, time of the year, and the geographical location it is not a very effective means of energy. The next source is wind energy. This is a source of clean energy produced by turbines that are used to drive generators which then feed electricity into the National Grid. The only pressing issue is that these types of systems will not have the correct location for these wind turbines to work. The next source is hydro energy. This is a more commercial developmentally focused type of energy that can sometimes be more reliable than solar or wind power. This energy is produced by either building a dam or a barrier, controlling the flow of the water to drive into a turbine that will generate electricity. The next source of energy is tidal energy. This source is like hydro energy that uses twice daily tidal currents to drive turbine generators (highly predictable easily to compensate for low tides). The geothermal energy is another source. As I mentioned in my last blog post, this power is based on earth’s heat. The final source of renewable energy is biomass energy. This energy is solid fuel made from plant materials (electricity). This is a cleaner and more energy efficient source. It also cost less than any other energy source to produce.

  1. Carliss,
Renewable energy is a great topic! There is so much new technology that is being created that is better for the environment. Ive caught myself noticing more and more houses having solar powered electricity. It’s pretty cool noticing that more and more folk are taking the environment into account! I didnt know that there was ways to create energy through tidal waves. That’s really neat. This was a great read!
