Desertification Taking Over

Jessica Seaton

The term desertification is defined as, “land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities.” These are areas that are extremely dry and receive little precipitation each year. The rainfall it does get transpires and evaporates from the land. The way desertification happens is due to the way the land is or is not managed. The climate, global warming and human flaws are some of the ways the land gets destroyed.  The climate plays a big factor as the land is warming more rapid than the Earth’s surface. The human caused issues are due to vegetation, deforestation and overgrazing of livestock. With the way rainfall is changing it is allowing the soil to dry up causing the desertification as well. It is hard to fix the problem due to overpopulation and people living in dry lands is increasing. It is also harder to control climate so the amount of droughts are expected to increase. This article mentions that dry lands could make up to 50%-56% of Earth’s surface.

  1. Great job on defining desertification because I didn’t know what that meant before this blog. It’s ironic that the agriculture methods we are doing today is going to make horrible to grow anything in the future. I think you exampled the issues of dry land and what or who’s causing it well in your blog.

  2. I really enjoyed reading your blog!
I think deforestation is a issue that should be covered by the media more. I think it such a scary thing to think we have the power to affect an habitat so much to the point that it cant retain water or moisture. I also think its such a tragedy that most of these issues are a result of humans; ruining environments for mass production
