Probs and Solution of Landfills

 There are loads of landfills around the U.S that cause a lot of damage to our land. One of the problems are the toxins that are released into the soil. The electronics that people throw away are filled with acids, mercury, lead  and other substances that will eventually leak into the environment and pose threats. A solution to this is they are constructing landfills with synthetic membranes to prevent the materials from leaking and directing them through sewage drains instead and turning it into fertilizer.


They membrane they use is always effective for trapping greenhouse gases from escaping into our air. Or they use a tunnel to digest the matter without creating gases. A big problem is when it rains the water filters through the waste in the landfill producing leachate, which is a combination of chemicals. A way to solve it is using different filters to remove the toxins.

    Jessica,
    Interesting info on landfills! I recommend looking at EPA(environment protection agency) information on landfills! They go into really good detail on the fundamentals of landfills and how they work! I think you might enjoy it! They specifically mention the process of groundwater! Great read! :)

    Landfills are disguiting but unfortunately essential whenever i drive to a city called dexter their is a landfill on the way that smells for about 5 whole miles! the amount of toxins us people have just thrown into the dirt is something saddening I dont even want to think about this was a very good post with alot of scientifcal data to back it up, Good Stuff! - hunter

      Hmm, if Dexter MO, gosh, I don't even remember a landfill. People used to just burn all their trash, even in town...

    Jessica,
    I feel that the use of synthetic membranes just adds to waste production. Especially if it’s trapping green house gases but still producing leachate. Landfill waste issues have been around forever and the only real solution is to go back to using all natural resources and limit the use of chemicals and plastic in our daily lives but that’s how many people make their livings. By creating products that last.

 Hannah Bailey  There have been posts about sea levels rising however its not just affecting the sea. The water rising is also affecting the land. There is always the conspiracy that Florida will be fully submerged. It is stated on “the travel” page that Florida could be submerged as soon as 2050.   Wildlife conservation is the way of practicing the protection of the animal species and the  habitats they survive in. The Endangered Species Act,  is the establishment and protection of public lands animals live in, and the responsibility of public practices that conserve wild animal populations.  With The earth continuing to grow at a fast rate, it is also meaning that more and more humans are taking up natural resources. This is endangering the existence of animals and their habitats. Land Reclamation

 Hannah Bailey Land Reclamation  Land is becoming more scarce as humans produce more technology and as the world wide population continues to increase. Land reclamation is "the process of creating new land from the sea." One way of doing this is by placing certain amount of big rocks and cement into a certain location in the water. To fill in between the rocks they place soil and sand until the new manmade land is at its desired height. This benefits the human race by creating land however, how does this impact our waters? How about the sea creatures? Is this damaging the environment? This does impact all of those things. In areas that use have high amount of crab and fish are seeing less and less. The underwater habitats are being destroyed. There was a reclamation project in China that was restricted for the harm against marine life.
