What is the 'Animal welfare Act'?

Nicole Price
The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was created and signed into law in 1966 with hopes of ensuring the humane treatment of animals that are intended to be exhibited to the public,  used for research, commercial transport, or even for commercial use/sale.  Under the AWA any person with animals that are covered by the law must be licensed or registered and they are to adhere to any and all AWA policies.     When the AWA was first put in place it was formally known as 'Laboratory Animal Welfare Act', it's original purpose was to:
  1. Protect dog and cat owners  from theft
  2. Prevent the sale, resale, or use of stolen cats and dogs
  3. Ensure that certain animals that were to be used for research received human care and treatment as needed
Over the years the AWA has been amended with a number of different acts to try and help its implementation. One of these acts was the Food Security act of 1985,  this has helped to better implementation of the AWA because it contained the ' Improved Standards for Laboratory Animals Act'  amendment. This amendment demanded that the animal caregivers were to be properly trained to care for them, it strengthened the standards for providing laboratory animal care, and so much more. As the years have gone by the AWA has been evolving for the better, changing with the times, and as of now cats, dogs, other mammals, and primates have been given coverage within the act. I continue to hold out hope that it will soon cover all animals being used in these ways.

  1. I think its very interesting how not all animals are included in this and I agree with you in hope that some day they all will be. Its sad to see post like this but I really enjoyed reading it because it makes you think about what's going on and it makes you think of ways you could possibly help. It just makes me love all my animals a little bit more and makes me hope that one day there won't be any struggling to get what they need or deserve.

  2. They say that everyone should be treated the same and also in Germany because it saying we don’t know what’s going on baby animals going on in the world, and I am a very big soft person for most and hopefully one day that they won’t be any type of an animal getting hurt or treated that way you’re being so mean illegally and I hope they get what they need and deserve because they’re their own species.

  3. Even though it's a really sad post about how bad animals are treated in this world, it's good knowledge to have. It's also good to know that AWA is getting better years by years. I hope that one day the animals would be treated in a respectful way.
