Pros and Cons of Geothermal Energy

Carliss Howell: Pros and Cons of Geothermal Energy

For my final blog post, I wanted to make a full circle and by talking geothermal energy and the pros and cons of this source of energy I feel like I can do so.

To recap, Geothermal Energy is built on the basis of Earth’s heat. It is energy that is said to be contained in rocks and fluids beneath the Earth’s crust. There are many pros to this type of energy those being that it is a reliable source of power, small land footprint , and usable for large and small scale installations. It is reliable because it is a very predictable source of energy. It will have a constant power output no matter the time of day or season. By small land footprint I mean is that building these last wont require a lot of land surface because the energy comes from the earth. Finally, large scale and small scale applications basically means that both large and small plants are able to use geothermal energy (commercial and residential).

Just as there are pros to geothermal energy there are cons, those being that geothermal energy is location dependent, provides high initial costs, and can lead to surface instability. Geothermal energy plants can only be built at specific sites because of the reservoirs (water supply) that are usually near tectonic plates boundaries or hot spots. The cost of geothermal plants also provide high construction costs. Building a geothermal plant is between $4,000 and $6,000 dollars. Finally, creation of these plants can cause earthquakes. By constructing these plants by drilling deep within the earth, it can cause instability underground. They can also cause slow subsidence over time as geothermal reservoirs are depleted.

  1. I have not heard a lot of things about geothermal energy, but I think it would be a great, healthy source of energy for our planet. I do find it interesting that it comes from the Earth and is like we are recycling it. With everything good, there is always a bad to follow it. Our government spend useful money on stuff, I think they can put some cost into something like that. Although, our world does have enough catastrophe in it we do not want to run the risk of more earthquakes. I think they could probably find other places to try and put something like this and prevent the amount of earthquakes that would occur.

  3. How to say that this is very interesting because I’ve never really heard of geothermal energy, this is pretty crazy because I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing but. But to you you have been saying that it is a good thing and the government will be actually spending some good money on it because they can put something into our world that way.
