Exploring Geothermal Energy

 Carliss Howell:  Exploring Geothermal Energy

Being provided with the topic of energy, there were a vast amount of subjects that I could have chosen to talk about for this blog, and I chose to look into defining geothermal energy and the more that I read and learned about this type of energy, the more interested I became.

According to the National Geographic website, geothermal energy is built on the basis of Earth’s internal heat. It is energy that is contained in the rocks and fluids beneath the Earth’s crust. The main use of geothermal energy is to generate electricity and to be an air source for buildings (producing either heating or cooling). It also talks in great depth about how it is used for geothermal heat pump systems. The article then goes into the three different types of geothermal power plants; dry steam, flash and binary. The article talks about how these power plants are generated in over 20 countries and the United States is the largest producer. The final information the article talks about is the advantages and the disadvantages. The advantages had been focused on the more costly side of using geothermal energy saying that it would be cheaper and be easily accessible. The disadvantages focused on the environmental side of things, those being that this energy would release hydrogen sulfide and that disposing of this type of fluid could contain low levels of toxic material into the environment.

Below I've attached a really nice picture of a geothermal energy plant. (I also found one with a sunset because those pictures are always aesthetically pleasing!)

  1. First off I really enjoyed reading through your post and learning more about a topic I didn't know a lot about. I think it is interesting how we use these different energies and I feel like we rely a lot more on these energies than we think we do. The advantage of it being lower in cost and more accessible would in some way help the economic systems in certain places. With this comes the disadvantage you talked about and when we also watched the movie I remember them talking about the gases and other chemicals being released into the earth atmosphere like you mentioned in your blog post.

  2. This article was very well done and was easy to follow. This article really brought me back to the time I traveled with my family to Iceland. It is said they were one of the pioneers to geothermic energy. While reading I notice that there was a mention of this being a cheaper and easily accessible which is something we need in a time of crisis. It was also very interesting to know that the US is one of the largest producers. I wonder if there is an easy way to combat the low levels of toxicity that we have not thought of yet. Very interesting post overall, it got me thinking.
