What is the 'Lacey Act'?

Nicole Price

When looking up Animal conservation laws and extinction today I was introduced to the oldest federal wildlife protection law in the U.S., The Lacey Act.

Created in 1900 by Iowa Congressman John Lacey after the sudden loss of North American wildlife game. These animals were being hunted to extinction for sport and thus the Lacey Act was born. It was made to make any exploitation of wildlife, alive or dead,  illegal. This includes import(s), export(s), transportation(s), etc. that are done in violation of any laws or regulations regarding wildlife travel. But the most interesting part of this Act is that even though it was created for the safety of wildlife it still pertains to the safety of humans. Any transportation of injurious, causing or likely to cause damage or harm, wild species must be managed by the U.S. Fish and Wild Life services (USFWS)according to the law. This particular provision within the Lacey Act has been the prime leader in wildlife trafficking prevention. The USFWS even has a list of approximately 200, maybe even more, injurious species. Over the years our Lacey Act has undergone some major changes that have widened the safeguard far beyond that of just endangered wildlife.

  1. Its exciting and very cool to me to see how one mans ideas from over a hundred years ago can still hold up today. it is very important and crucial to limit how much we can hunt an animal espically when we consider how much damage we have done to the natural envirement natuarally

  2. When reading through your post I was engaged the whole time! I was surprised that to this day most of these laws are still being upheld and I think its awesome that more have been put in place to protect those animals. I also think its very interesting that they have made and put out a list of the certain animals you are allowed to hunt and the limit you can hunt too. It's a good idea for them to be so involved and make sure people are doing the right thing and staying educated about hunting.

  3. This post brought to life a key element that tends to slip my thought process about wildlife, the laws. I was stuck reading this post due to how it caught my eye right off the title. It is good to know that there is a safeguard put in place for both humans but especially the wildlife we take for granted everyday. It is also good to know that laws such as this are being expanded to protect more and more species from people that want to abuse the system. Hunters education is highly recommended, I have taken the full course myself because understanding the hunt is much more important than just randomly taking the life of an animal. It is good to see that the vast majority of people are starting to see that.

  4. I liked your blogger post which brought up a subject that I have never learned about before. I feel like when we are learning about environmental issues we normally hear things we have already known about. I liked that this was something new and something people don't really know about. There are a lot of animals that used to be popular in different areas in the world but are now going extinct because of the sport in hunting certain species.
