Should water be higher for companies?

Image
Ahram Solis We all know that water is usually wasted when making products for companies.  Companies should start inventing water-saving technology, but they won’t do that anytime soon because it’s cheaper to waste water that invest in that technology. If companies get charged a higher price for water, they would probably make an effort to save their water and they should because water is a valuable resource. On the flip side, the poor often end up playing disproportionately high prices for water, stunting development. Companies won’t change until we start realizing the detrimental effects of the waste water and need to change that order by changing the prices for companies. https://www.wri.org/blog/2017/08/7-reasons-were-facing-global-water-crisis

Groundwater issues

Image
30% of the worlds available freshwater is groundwater. NASA sent out a recent study that 21 out of 37, of the largest aquifers in the world are being depleted. It is estimated that 20 percent of the worlds crops depend on groundwater. Northern India which is the nations breadbasket for wheat and rice produce, is depleting ground water at a fast rate of 54 billion cubic meters a year. In the United States 50% of people get their drinking water from groundwater and 27 trillion gallons of ground water are brought up and used in the United States per year. Some areas are sinking such as Mexico City as an inch per month because of the ground water depleting underneath the city.  As the population increases the depletion of the ground water increases as well. Not soon but soon enough there will be little ground water left. Groundwater is a huge source of drinking water so when will there be a solution. https://www.seametrics.com/blog/groundwater/

Food and Agriculture Scientist

Image
A food scientist studies the good and bad from processing foods by using microbiology, engineering, and chemistry. The nutrition is looked at through seeing how the products coming a long and how it will be processed. They look for new nutritional food sources and investigate avenues for making processed foods taste good, safe, and healthy. On top of making sure the food is healthy and good enough to be put out on shelfs they try and find the best ways to sell. They look at the view points from shoppers and they also try and find ways to preserve food that might be out for a long period of time. The scientist help the farmers out a lot by figuring out ways to get there products distributed.

For Love Of Water (FLOW)

Image
Hannah Bailey The title of my blog may be misleading in the aspect of my current topic is land. Everyday our land is being destroyed due to farming, road construction, or even for living spaces. This affects National Forests like I have mentioned in a previous blog however, it is also affecting wetlands. Lands that also consist partly of water. Wetlands, like the ones in Michigan, are important for all living organisms because it is one of our limited sources of water. Wetlands are also habitats for many living organisms. It is crucial that these among many other lands that need protected. Under Michigan's Wetlands Protect Act, the destruction to Michigans wetlands have lowered down tremendously! This is great for their state and we should follow in their footsteps! All Wetlands need to be under some sort of protection. The Wetlands Protection Program(WPP) is currently creating a program in order to create voluntary acts to benefit the Wetlands.  https://forloveofwater.org/is...

Desertification Taking Over

Image
Jessica Seaton The term desertification is defined as, “land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities.” These are areas that are extremely dry and receive little precipitation each year. The rainfall it does get transpires and evaporates from the land. The way desertification happens is due to the way the land is or is not managed. The climate, global warming and human flaws are some of the ways the land gets destroyed.    The climate plays a big factor as the land is warming more rapid than the Earth’s surface. The human caused issues are due to vegetation, deforestation and overgrazing of livestock. With the way rainfall is changing it is allowing the soil to dry up causing the desertification as well. It is hard to fix the problem due to overpopulation and people living in dry lands is increasing. It is also harder to control climate so the amount of droughts are expected to increas...

The National Wildlife Federation and Understanding Conservation

Image
Nicole Price Conservation is defined as  the efficient use or preservation of resources, and according to the National Wildlife Federation, (NWF) wildlife conservation is defined as the preservation and protection of animals, plants, and their habitats. Their main goal is to ensure that all future generations will get to enjoy and explore the natural world and all it brings just as we have. The best way for anybody to really help wildlife is to understand wildlife species and how they interact with the world's ecosystems. All the ecosystems of the world are intertwined and if one fails then they all fail. This is where the lively hood of plants and animals comes into action, much like we prepare for seasons, animals and plants do the same. If you've ever noticed, plants and animals react to environmental changes like it's 'clockwork'. They move the same way, to the same place, around the same time every year. Think about migratory birds, every year right before th...

Types of conservation

Image
Believe it or not, there are actually three types of conservation. One is obviously Environmental conservation, the next being Animal conservation, and finally Human conservation. Environmental conservation is the world around us such as places and habitats for animals. The other two deal with animals and humans. While each have there own rules and regulations specific to them, they all deal with protection and preservation. We as humans may be destroying the environment but it is also us that has the piece to save it along with saving animals too. It seems that we as humans, as seen in the picture are supposed to act as the middle ground between life and death. We have decisions to make that will harm but we will also save.  https://www.theleap.co.uk/what-is-conservation/

Extraction methods for oil

Carliss Howell: Extraction methods for oil             Throughout the semester, I have learned a lot of information  about energy regarding the different types of energy, the advantages and disadvantages, and different exploration methods. Today, I decided to look into extraction methods. The specific extraction method I decided to look into was the extraction of oil.               Oil extraction can be defined as a sort of chemistry. The oil can come from animal by-products, fleshy fruits (such as olives and palm), oilseeds (such as cotton seeds and sesame seeds), soybeans, and peanuts. There are three main general ways extraction of oil takes place either by rendering, mechanical pressing, and or extracting. Rendering is used for the animal-by products and oleaginous fruits, mechanical pressing is for the oil-bearing seeds and nuts, and extracting is for volatile solvents (l...

Sea Shepherd

Image
Rasmus Svensson  Today I’m going to talk a little about the association “sea shepherd” because a few years ago, I remember that my dad bought my a T-shirt with their logo on. I was confused at first because I didn’t understand why he bought it for me but after he explained to me that he was helping this association because they are trying to protect marine wild life. Their mission is to protect, conserve and defend our ocean.  Sea Shepherd is an international, non-profit marine conservation organization. They take direct action to protect the marine wildlife from illegal exploitation and environment destruction. They fight for the health of our ocean ecosystem, they are trying to prevent overfishing and habitat destruction. They work with national authorities to attack  illegal fishing in sovereign waters. The sea shepherd fleet play a crucial role in their mission because they travel around the world with it, from Antarctica to Africa. In 1977, sea shepherd wa...

Biden Energy Plan

Image
The Biden administration is moving to try to power around 10 million homes along the east coast near new jersey only off of wind energy. He is launching a 9-year plan that is supposed to reach its max potential in 2030 This production of these huge wind turbines could lead to around 44,000 Jobs. This effort will also lead to the prevention of 78 Metric Tons of carbon dioxide emissions a Key point of stopping global warming.  Joe Biden says this is a huge chance to make good-paying union jobs to create a positive change in the environment  and making a positive recovery to the economy.

Why sea levels are rising

Image
Teagan Lovin  3/29/2021 Why sea levels are rising  Sea levels have been rising for centuries. This is a big problem in today culture that any people over look. With sea levels rising, it can cause storm surges that go farther onto land causing for more flood and eventually lost of that land completely. One of the main causes of sea level rising is thermal expansion. This means by the earth temperatures warming up it causes the sea leaves to rise by the melting of the glaciers. The ocean absorbs  almost 40 percent of the earths heat. This is connected to global warming because it’s things we are doing as humans that is causing the planet to warm up.  https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/sealevel.html

Food shortages

Image
In 2021, Texas has had their first worst time with the snow and ice. Texas people had to go through I think almost a month without any food or power because of the terrible weather. A lot of people had to get food last minute or live with what they have. Most big food stores had to keep closed due to lack of  electricity because it will end very bad. Such as having that big car collision having most people pass away and a lot have been injured because most people in Texas do not know how to drive on roads that have ice like common sense don’t drive in the first place. But other than that it’s been tough for my family from Texas. Most people prepare for stuff like this and some don’t because who knew right?  https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/17/texas-food-supply-power-outage/

What is the 'Animal welfare Act'?

Image
Nicole Price The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was created and signed into law in 1966 with hopes of ensuring the humane treatment of animals that are intended to be  exhibited to the public,  used for research, commercial transport, or even for commercial use/sale.  Under the AWA any person with animals that are covered by the law must be licensed or registered and they are to adhere to any and all AWA policies.      When the AWA was first put in place it was formally known as 'Laboratory Animal Welfare Act', it's original purpose was to:  Protect dog and cat owners  from theft Prevent the sale, resale, or use of stolen cats and dogs  Ensure that certain animals that were to be used for research received human care and treatment as needed Over the years the AWA has been amended with a number of different acts to try and help its implementation. One of these acts was the Food Security act of 1985,  this has helped to better implementat...

Intersting Agriculture Facts- Ashley Ritter

Image
Did you know that Agriculture is the largest employer of the world and 29% of the farmers are in charge of beef. I know most fo the post have been about explaining and giving lots of information about how agriculture works. I thought it would be fun to see some interesting facts that some and most people don't know about. In the United States alone there is 914 million acres of farm land ranging from crop to live stock and many others. With there being so much land for farmers to carry out there lively hood it makes you think how many farmers there are out there. All though there is not a set number it is said that one average US farmer can feed up to 155 people. Thats a lot of people to be fed by one single farmer. These farmers also do their part on helping people outside of the US, in 2015 133.1 billion dollars worth of American product was exported to those in other countries and since then that number has gone up.  https://www.realityworks.com/5-interesting-facts-all-about-agr...

Solar Power

Solar cells are also called photovoltaic cells. They are called this because of the process to convert photons into electricity. Most of the solar cells that are used today are made out of silicon. Another kind of solar cell is made out of very thin layers of semiconductor materials like cadmium telluride. This kind of solar cell is called thin film solar cells. https://www.nrel.gov/research/re-photovoltaics.html

Probs and Solution of Landfills

Image
Jessica Seaton   There are loads of landfills around the U.S that cause a lot of damage to our land. One of the problems are the toxins that are released into the soil. The electronics that people throw away are filled with acids, mercury, lead     and other substances that will eventually leak into the environment and pose threats. A solution to this is they are constructing landfills with synthetic membranes to prevent the materials from leaking and directing them through sewage drains instead and turning it into fertilizer. They membrane they use is always effective for trapping greenhouse gases from escaping into our air. Or they use a tunnel to digest the matter without creating gases. A big problem is when it rains the water filters through the waste in the landfill producing leachate, which is a combination of chemicals. A way to solve it is using different filters to remove the toxins.   https://www.hcr-llc.com/blog/the-3-most-common-landfill-problems-solutio...

FOSSIL FUELS : ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Image
Carliss Howell: FOSSIL FUELS: ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES       I believe that we all have a general knowledge about the definition of fossil fuels. Fossils fuels can be defined as animal and plant matter that died million of years ago and have then been subjected to heat and pressure over million of years.  There are many advantages and disadvantages of producing fossil fuels. Some of those advantages are that this type of fuel is a cheap source of energy, they are reliable, abundant, and has become a very useful product. This has created means for this type of fuel to become easy to find and produce because of the cost. This also create a sense of dependability, because of the never ending supply that is easily accessible. All together fossil fuels have revolutionized the way that we live all together. Just as there are many advantages, there are several disadvantages that need to be considered. Fossil fuels are non renewable meaning that eventually i...

Clean Water Action

Image
Rasmus Svensson Clean Water Action Clean Water Action is an American advocacy group who fights for the environment, but they focus more specially on water pollution. It was created in 1972, this advocacy group focuses on canvassing and gaining support for political issues and candidates to help some environmental causes. Canvassing  is the systematic initiation of direct contact with individuals, commonly used during political campaigns. It  is an organization that is based in Washington, D.C.  This group was formed in 1972 by David Zwick. Today their mission is to protect  our environment, health, economic well-being and community quality of life.  Clean Water Action organizes politic movements and coalitions to take direct action, they also organize campaigns to elect environmental candidates and last but not least, to solve environmental and community problems.  Here is what they do to t ake action to protect drinking water and clean up polluted wa...

Nature

Image
I believe Nature is all around this earth and just surrounds us. The oceans, forests, air, and even the ground we walk on all are the part of nature. Nature plays a huge role because it is basically one huge resource that plays part on the continuation of life on this earth. I couldn't imagine life on earth with a destroyed and trashed natural environment. I believe if us individuals and more programs took the right  appropriate steps to conserve nature, there would be less problems with conservation. This must be a priority for all humans. I feel like anyone and everyone can help with trying to save mother nature by playing some part of cleansing it every day.  https://www.iberdrola.com/environment/most-important-environmental-issues

Land Reclamation

Image
Hannah Bailey Land Reclamation  Land is becoming more scarce as humans produce more technology and as the world wide population continues to increase. Land reclamation is "the process of creating new land from the sea." One way of doing this is by placing certain amount of big rocks and cement into a certain location in the water. To fill in between the rocks they place soil and sand until the new manmade land is at its desired height. This benefits the human race by creating land however, how does this impact our waters? How about the sea creatures? Is this damaging the environment? This does impact all of those things. In areas that use have high amount of crab and fish are seeing less and less. The underwater habitats are being destroyed. There was a reclamation project in China that was restricted for the harm against marine life. The picture shown is the progress the China project had before it was prohibited.  https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetar...

Biden the Builder! Can he fix it?!?

Image
New President Joe Biden has talked about pushing the energy infrastructure package to account for climate and energy provisions Biden has had talks considering using upwards of 3 Trillion yes With a T! to core priorities which he states are Climate Change, Taxes, Education, and Health Care. The "infrastructure" component of this involves around 400 Billion Dollars to combat Climate Change to make a better and healthier environment for people to live in the future Bidens current plans also are hopeful to the Idea of making Electric vehicle charging stations across the country and working on improving the Grid as well. Also plans to spend around 60$ Billion on Green Transit and 46$ Billion on Climate change research. The New York Times also tell that the Plan may Spend around 1T on Construction of roads and bridges.

What can you do to help with environmental issues with water

Image
Teagan Lovin  How to help  Their are many things we can do to help prevent things like water pollution in our water. On example of something we can do is to cut down in hazardous waste such as motor oil, pesticides, pick up leftover paint cans and many more options.  You can also think twice about what you use for your lawn care. When it rains those toxic chemicals flow down and containment our water we use to drink.  One last thing we can do is dispose of your medicine probably. Their are lots of volunteer groups to help clean up the water that surround us. So you can consider joining a group to help with the cause. https://www.epa.gov/sourcewaterprotection/how-can-you-help-protect-source-water

Hydropower Dams

Hydropower dams are another form of clean energy but they can still affect the environment. They do not produce air pollutants but it still affects thins like the local fish population. It can change the physical and ecological characteristics of the river which can negatively affect local plants and wildlife. Producing the material to build the dam and building the dams will also produce a lot of fossil  https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/hydropower/hydropower-and-the-environment.php

Seafood Safety

Image
The development of keeping the sea safe has been pushed more heavily since more and more waste has been thrown into the sea. Waste in our oceans is causing wildlife and more species to start dying faster. Animals of the sea are needed in today's economy because we use those products that the animals produce. Whether it is for eating or the oils in their skins the animals help with many different problems in the economy. With the use of all the products being produced it is hard for the fishermen and other companies  to make their product and get it if our oceans are polluted. The pollution in our oceans is just caused by a number of things but I think what causes it the most is that people just throw their trash and garbage anywhere. This trash slowly but surely finds its way into the ocean and causes sealife to die or have other issues when eating or absorbing the chemicals.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act

Image
https://marinesanctuary.org/blog/marine-mammal-protection-act-protect-species/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI36TvoNKm7wIVUPHACh2SyQTQEAAYAiAAEgJ2e_D_BwE Nicole Price The Marine Mammal Protection Act MMPA was signed into effect, law, in October of 1972 by then-President Richard Nixon. It was initially put in place due to rising fear of the complete depletion and extinction of marine wildlife due to human activity. This act took a more ecosystemic approach toward marine life management. They focused on the prevention of the rapid decline in marine life populations. Benefits of the MMPA include: Prohibiting the hunting, capture, or harassment of the endangered wildlife Enacts a ban on the export, import, and/or sale of marine mammal parts within the U.S. Prohibits harassment such as getting too close, inuring, or even disturbing any behavioral patterns such as migration, breeding, sheltering, and feeding of marine life animals.  Provision management of the MMPA falls to the National Oceani...

Sea level rise

Image
Ahram Solis  In the past few years there has a been a rise to the sea level and this can affect the population living near the oceans. The reason the sea level is rising is because the ice glaciers have been melting from the climate warming, which is releasing high amounts of water and making the ocean rise higher. A nasa study says,”Sea level from 1993 to 2020 has been rising about 3.3 millimeters per year.” This shows that if the ice glaciers keep on melting the people who live near water will have to move because their land will be under water if this continues. This will make everyone around the world to relocate, which can be horrific problem. The places that will be most affected by this will be island because they will totally covered by the ocean. This is just one way global warming will affect how we live in the future. https://climate.nasa.gov/news/3030/rising-waters/

Land, Land, and Land

Image
Jessica Seaton There are multiple ways we are changing land and it is impacting our local to global weather. With the changes in land coverage it is impacting the flow of energy, water and greenhouse gases between the land and our atmosphere.  It is said that forest provide cooler air than cropland, that is why reforestation is important but it also depends on the location of the trees to decide if it will actually help with climate adaptation. Fires are another factor of our land, farmers use control burn on their fields and some places get to dry that fires break out and it is harmful to our atmosphere by releasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.   It also has small particles that are being sent to our atmosphere and reducing our solar energy reaching the Earth. With the amount of water going into crops for irrigation is also affecting the atmosphere by increasing atmospheric moisture. It is a hard to deal with what is good and bad for us. We need crops...

Renewable energy on contaminated land

Image
Hannah Bailey  The idea of putting renewable energy on contaminated land is a great idea. The land may be contaminated due to things like landfills. If we put a renewable energy source here this will allow us to become less dependent on nonrenewable sources that are going to run out eventually. Doing so can even reduce land taxes because its reusing land that isn't usable for human interaction activities. This isnt only a great thing for the economy, it is better for the environment. This helps fight against global warming and is using land that has already been corrupted. The amount of land we have is becoming scarce. There is only about 5% of land that hasn’t been touched by human kind. The Center for Creative Land recycling is a organization that is helping expand the idea of land recycling. “Recycling land” is going to be a great way to save land and save our planet.  https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015-04/documents/contaminated_land_resuse_factsheet.pdf ...

Water privatization

Image
Rasmus Svensson, There is approximately 71% water on the surface of planet earth, even though it seems a lot, only 1% of that is consumable water for the humans. That's why there is an ongoing debate over how to manage this essential resource in the best way possible for the human's life. Even though it seems selfish and bad for the environment, it has a positive effect because it offers an economic solution to the city. Most of the time, it big companies that privatize the water, the problem is that the population has less control and less to say about it. When the government decides to sell possession of the water industry to a big company or big investors, the public quickly loses all say in their water management, which causes injustices. These contract as usually short term, so whenever the environment is damage because of the water, there was none long term solution to it. That can be a loophole for the big company, when they exploited nature to make more money. For exam...

Solar Energy

Image
Carliss Howell: Solar Energy Regarding one of my previous blog’s topics today I want to go in depth about a source of renewable energy. Today I will be talking about solar panels and solar energy. Solar energy is energy that comes from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy. This is said to be cleanest and the most abundant renewable energy. This type of energy generates electricity, provides light for comforting interior environment, and heats water for domestic, commercial, or industrial use. There are several uses for solar energy in today those being built for distributed generation, central station, and utility-scale power plants. All these uses can also be used as a storage place for energy. They can produce for distribution after the sun sets, using cutting edge solar and store technology.   There are three main ways to utilize solar energy; photovoltaics, solar heating and cooling, and concentrating solar power. Photovoltaics is electricity prod...

Controlled burns

Image
Levi Elfrink  Controlled burning  Controlled burning is something that needs to be done, plain and simple. It is how you, for lack of a better term, “reset” the ground for either harvesting crops or habitat management. This mode of habitat management is not always appreciated due to supposed “unknown” or “unsafe” variables while completing this task. To get the safest outcome one must understand that the wind must be very low or nonexistent. It also takes a full team of roughly 8 people to cover all ground and you may need more people depending on the size of the area being burnt. Before you go burn it is understood to contact your local fire and police department so they know whether or not to attend and supply aid. If you grow up on a farm you can rent equipment that is consistent of, two water backpacks with a pump hose that sprays water, you get two, high power, backpack leaf blowers that are activated to same as a typical leaf blower, you also get four rakes, a meta...

Biggest Buyer of Renewable Energy

Image
Amazon is the Biggest Corporate Buyer of Renewable energy As more and more tech companies push and lead the way to renewable energy at the end of 2020 Amazon surpassed google for the First time, Which key aim is to use Fossil-fuel-free electricity. When a factory of an office needs more electricity than they can produce they can Purchase a Power Purchase Agreement to buy a certain number of Megawatts from an Outside Provider.  Tech Companies are just the kind of energy-fueled places that thrive off of this extra electricity. Amazon has made a vow to go completely Renewable by 2030 and made a huge deal with a Germany Company last year. Currently the largest PPA agreement on record for Europe. Tech companies are whats making this idea of being completely renewable ran businesses possible with their large funding into the idea. While this is great Amazon Carbon Emissions, are still rising and they need to find a way to reduce these as well as Improving their Climate Credibility -...

Lead in water

Image
Teagan Lovin In the article “Health Effects of Exposure to Lead in Drinking Water” it talks about how there is led in the water and who it will effect.     Children and infants are at greater risk than adults when it comes to drinking water with lead in it. Children are more likely to die from it. Lead can damage the child’s central and peripheral nervous system, which could cause learning disabilities and other major effects.     All children are at this risk of getting exposed to lead in their water just by house supplies. Not only are children at a great risk but also pregnant women, it’s not necessarily the women at risk but the fetus is. If a pregnant woman drinks the water with lead in, it it could cause death to the fetus. This is why we need to care about water we drink and help get ride of water pollution so we don’t put our children at more risk than we already have.   https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/basic-information-about-l...

The cost in agriculture

Image
Most of the stuff in the agriculture business can come with a lot of crops and plants basically all of the stuff we use on a daily basis to search food sugar canes basically all that stuff for that is it mean it’s just all about the cross, it’s mainly about what they spend on how much. Such as fossil fuels, we use machinery to mobilize most of the soil that we use the crops will be using during the harvesting time. That is one of the most problems or challenges that the North American agriculture is facing right now. Sun even say that the cheapest fossil fuels won’t last forever, which personally I don’t think that it would last longer than what they actually think. This doesn’t even hide the fact that most of our water is polluted because they think they can store some chemicals to make it better for the future which is really hurting our economy and the mother nature that’s out there and animal species that are living in the water which can be harmful to their matters.  htt...

Production for Agriculture

With the world's population being expected to grow the demand for global food systems goes up every day . Thinking about changing the systems up and making them more suitable to prepare for a higher demand in food is what food companies are starting and preparing to do. When doing this it would help people who can't get jobs or help those who can't afford the higher priced food. With the change in the food systems and the suitability of our agriculture systems this will help the ecosystem and combat climate change. This will become possible with businesses keeping their products to the cheapest price and keep three work areas clean and eco friendly. Keeping products cheap will help the farms and the agriculture systems with keeping the fields and three products healthy and clean. Having clean and healthy products when selling to distributors is how the farmers make their most money so this will help them produce more and give them the opportunity to have more product bought...

Houses Lifting

Image
We watched in class a long video on how the water is rising as the Atlantic's ice is melting away causing the sea level to rise in the oceans. Norfolk, Virginia is taking some action to protect their homes by rising their homes on wooden stilts and cinderblocks. You might have seen this happen in Florida as well for hurricanes and other disasters causing flooding and houses to be flooded. Personally when I go to the outer states that are on the lines of the ocean I see more and more houses being built because of sudden  flooding and hurricanes. It is very sad to see all this happening around the costs and how the beaches are going away. Fun fact with my personal life and this article, my brother who is in the Navy is stationed at Norfolk, Virginia and is on deployment right now about to be in Greece(I am very jealous lol.) https://e360.yale.edu/features/flooding-hot-spots-why-seas-are-rising-faster-on-the-u.s.-east-coast

Wildfires & Koalas

Image
In 2019 Australia had a lot of wildfires staring in the middle of forests. Many koalas lived in those forests which cause a lot of them to burn in some of those fires. Most animals can run or dig underground but koalas pretty much live and survive off the trees in the forest, so it was just one big disaster. The Koala hospital located in New South Wales are trying to help injured Koalas from wildfires and also help them breed new ones. It is also known that more and more koalas are getting chlamydia, so that's why the hospital are trying to treat them before they go extinct. I think it is amazing how the hospital is helping out these koalas because I believe no animals should go extinct and that more programs should help out more on that.  https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/struggling-koalas-get-help-from-a-bold-breeding-program/

Biodiversity

Image
Levi Elfrink Biodiversity  In this class we have talked about all the gloom and doom but there are good things that take place that I think deserves attention. Biodiversity is a very interesting topic that has to do a lot with conservation and habitat management. Believe it or not it actually has to do with pretty much everything in the earth environment, from the water, to the species, and type of bugs we see. All factors matter when discussing the survival of wildlife. Biodiversity is the reason a lady bug might not have as many spots as another. It also can explain why two deer can have two different colored coats.  https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/12/what-is-biodiversity-and-why-does-it-matter-to-us

King of the Jungle

Image
Nicole Price       The Lion is commonly known as 'The King of the Jungle", but they are soon to be King of the dead. I might be making it to be a lot worse than it actually is but the Lion has been recently listed as a 'Vulnerable' species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (ICNU). Their numbers have rapidly declined to the 20,000's and they have been declared 'Critically Endangered' within West Africa but they are completely extinct in, about, 26 African States.  A lot of the number declines have to do with fragmentation, the rise in poaching, and habitat loss. They are most notably affected by ILLEGAL bushmeat hunting and fur/body part trade.  Bushmeat hunting is where the animal is hunted for human consumption. This is definitely something that we can regulate or even stop entirely.  The road to recovery starts and ends with us. They could have an impressive recovery if more effort could be put toward better capacity improveme...

Environmental Changes in Alaska

Image
Jessica Seaton   The environment is Alaska has been changing constantly due to the change in temperature and precipitation. There has been sea ice loss, river and coastal flooding, and ecosystem changes all throughout the state of Alaska. It has been consistently warmer than in past centuries with northern and western regions warming at twice the rate of the southeastern part.    The snow season has shortened and perception has increased, the water is even warmer than it has been it the past 150 years. With the change of water temperatures, algae, fisheries and even the human health are being impacted. Several floods have happened in the fall season when seas that expect ice to use as a divider from sea storms are no longer present. There have even been signs of droughts occurring in southeast Alaska.

Negative impact of dams

Image
Rasmus Svensson There is around 100,000 dams in America, at least 90,000 of them are dams that are more than 6 feet tall and the rest is small dams. Even though dams can be beneficial for humans, it does not have the same affect on the environment. Although not all dams damage in the same way. There are 4 ways than dams can damage rivers. The first way is that the dams prevent fish to migrate, it means that they limits the fishes to found habitats, food and also escape from predators. The second one is that is slows down the river. A lot of organisms that lives in rivers depends on steady flow to guide them. Third one is that  dams can alter habitat,  which means that they change the way rivers function. It impact the organism that lives there because it gets trap under rocks. The last way is that the dams impact the quality of the water, it changes the temperature of the water, so some spices will get affected and not survive. https://www.americanrivers.org/threats-solu...

Mining

Image
Hannah Bailey  Mining is causing a lot of negative affects on things like the land, environment, water, and so many more. There has even been a case to where contaminated water was more acidic than a car battery. There is a fact on the WMAN website stating “seventy-eight mines and mining facilities are so toxic that the U.S. environmental protection agency has designed them as federal super fund site.” The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation Liability Act created in 1980(CERCLA) is informally known as SuperFund Sites. This means that they are so hazardous that the government has to get involved to clean up the contamination. Mining pollutes water, increases cancer, killing animals like fish and birds, destroying the land, and is constantly releasing toxins.  https://wman-info.org/resource/environmental-impacts-of-mining/ https://www.epa.gov/superfund/what-superfund

Deep sea well exploration & total SA

Image
Carliss Howell: Deep Sea Well Exploration and Total SA Total SA is a French oil company that is set to drill a new record offshore well at a water depth of 3,628m off the coast in Angola, Africa. So far, the worlds deepest sea drilling has been achieved at 7,725m but the information was only used for scientific and research purposes. This new drill record will be a new world record for the deepest oil well ever drilled. This well will exceed another well that was drilled for oil production located in Uruguay, which has been drilled at 3,400m in 2016. To understand why this is important for our world, we must first understand the definition of deep water drilling to fully understand the significance of this process. Deepwater drilling is a mechanical process where a deep wellbore (hole) is drilled into a depth greater than 300mm. We can practice this type of drilling because of our constant technological advancements and the increasing demand for oil exploration. Yo...

Waterwaste

Image
Ahram Solis Water isn’t just essential because we need it survive, but we also use it in industries every day to produce items like clothes or mechanical pencils just to name a few. Waterwaste is water that is filled with oil and grease, lint, sand, grit, heavy metals. Some companies are regulated, bot some are not and they release it into our river systems. For example, Chemical industries usually have trouble solving a solution to wastewater because it has so much pollution in the water and they release it to cut costs. Government and state regulations have to become stricter to not let the industries get away with waterwaste water. Filter presses technology should be required for this industries to minimize the environmental effects. https://www.micronicsinc.com/filtration-news/what-is-industrial-wastewater/
